- Adult patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation
- Patients with atrial flutter
Not Applicable To
- Patients with mechanical heart valves
- Patients with moderate-to-severe mitral stenosis
- Patients already on anticoagulation for other reasons
Clinical Notes
- A score of 0 in males or 1 in females suggests low risk
- Female sex only adds a point if other risk factors are present
- Score should be reassessed periodically as risk factors may change
- Consider bleeding risk (HAS-BLED score) when deciding on anticoagulation
