What is it?

Applicable To

  • Adult patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation
  • Patients with atrial flutter

Not Applicable To

  • Patients with mechanical heart valves
  • Patients with moderate-to-severe mitral stenosis
  • Patients already on anticoagulation for other reasons

Clinical Notes

  • A score of 0 in males or 1 in females suggests low risk
  • Female sex only adds a point if other risk factors are present
  • Score should be reassessed periodically as risk factors may change
  • Consider bleeding risk (HAS-BLED score) when deciding on anticoagulation
